A brief Intoduction to the Practice
Ludlow is a lovely market town in South Shropshire, England, close to the Welsh border and in the Welsh Marches. It lies within a bend of the River Teme. On its eastern bank forming an area of 350 acres (1.4km) and centred on a small hill is the site of Ludlow Castle and the market place. From there the streets of the medieval town slope downward to the river Teme, and northward towards the river Corve. The town is in a sheltered spot beneath the Clee Hills, which are clearly visible from the town. With a population of around 10,000, with a further 8,000 residents within a 10miles radius of Ludlow, it is the largest town in South Shropshire. It boasts Michelin starred Restaurants, a Shakespearean Festival, and a Medieval Food Festival each year.

The Practice started its life from the Historic Broad Street in Ludlow back in 1987. This was steadily outgrown as Ludlow began to grow, the Practice list expanded and more services were offered to the patients. A new ‘Portcullis Surgery’ was built in Upper Galdeford in 1985; this is where the three Partner GP’s, three Assistant GP’s, four Practice Nurses along with a Phlebotomist, Counsellor, Reception and Administrative Staff work from 08:30am – 18:00pm Monday to Friday, with extended hours surgeries for commuters on Monday evenings and also a Friday breakfast Surgery.
The Practice is now looking to expand further and relocate with a new Ludlow Hospital to a new larger site thus, further improving Health Care for the Ludlow Community.
We have produced this website to provide you with information about the way the Practice is organised and the services that are provided directly by Practice Staff, or by other members of the Primary Health Care Team. Services will, by necessity, change from time to time, please do not hesitate to telephone the Practice to check the current position.
This Practice caters for patients living within an 8 mile radius of Ludlow (excluding Leintwardine, Craven Arms and Doddington).
Portcullis is a non-dispensing Practice.
Newly Registered Patients
To register with our practice, please download our New Patient Registration Pack, or call in to the Surgery and collect it from reception. New patients registering with the Practice will be asked to complete a Health Questionnaire which enables the Practice to manage ongoing medical conditions.

You will be registered with the Practice as a whole and not with an individual Doctor, but you are free to consult any of the Doctors within the Practice. It is usually best to keep to the same Doctor during any particular illness.
Temporary Residents
We are always happy to see any relatives or friends staying with you if they need a Doctor or Nurse. They will need to fill out a short form for the information to be returned to their own Doctor. Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment to allow time for completion of the necessary forms.
Zero Tolerance
This Practice supports the Government’s NHS zero tolerance zone campaign. GPs and their Staff have the right to care for others without fear of being attacked or abused. We ask that you treat your GP and Practice Staff with courtesy and consideration.
Disabled Patients
The Surgery is fully equipped for disabled access, including toilet facilities.
Nights and Weekends Out of Hours Service
When you telephone the Practice outside office hours, you will be given the telephone number for the Shropshire General Practice Answering Service (Shropdoc). A Receptionist will take your details and a GP or Nurse will call you back to discuss the problem with you.
All emergencies will be dealt with immediately. If you need to be
seen before the next day’s usual Surgery you will be asked to attend
the local Primary Care Emergency Centre, where a Doctor will examine
and treat you.
By Appointment only; you cannot 'turn' up unannounced, please call
Shropdoc first.
Home visits will only be made if you are genuinely house bound. The GP emergency centre is located at Ludlow Hospital Minor Injuries Department.
The Minor Injury Unit at Ludlow Hospital is open to the public and is staffed by Nurse Practitioners between the hours of 08:00 and 22:00 daily for genuine minor injuries only.
Please telephone Shropdoc first before attending.
