Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment used to help menopause symptoms. It replaces the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which fall to low levels as you approach the menopause.

Portcullis Policy for HRT
We are in the process of switching our ladies who are on
Our preferred methods of HRT are:
- Oestrogen only patch or Oestrogen gel (+ MIRENA COIL for patients with a womb)
- Oestrogel gel (+ Micronised Progesterone for patients with a womb)
- Combined Hormonal patch or Oestrogen only Hormonal patch (+ Micronised Progesterone for patients with a womb)
Why do we prefer transdermal methods instead of oral HRT medications?
- There is little or no increase in the risk of breast cancer from oestrogen-only HRT (gel or patch), which you can take if you’ve had a hysterectomy to remove your womb.
- HRT patches, sprays and gels do not increase the risk of blood clots. This is because oestrogen is safer when it’s absorbed into your body through your skin.
- HRT patches, gel or spray) do not increase the risk of stroke.
